Yep, I came across this recently - it's the Aptimize product. I haven't seen it in action, but I'm definitely impressed and Microsoft used it for http://sharepoint.microsoft.com. As far as I can see it automates some of the (non-SharePoint specific) tasks in my checklist. So it might come down to a financial decision on whether it's more cost-effective to do it manually or automate. Certainly promises to simplify the process though.

Yes, it comes down to your site design at the end of the day - certainly when I've done it I've known that the front-end of the site absolutely will not use any of SharePoint's CSS classes for example.

But testing is the only way to be sure.

Afraid I'm not aware of any useful documentation on each file, and certainly the implementation of CSS in SharePoint 2007 is "sub-optimal".

I agree with core.js, I took a look at it and it looks to be related to backend/admin interface/functionality. I think we'll have to keep core.css, though.

Do you know if there is any documentation anywhere that explains what each .js and .css file are for? Sharepoint serves up a lot of them and I dont' want to send anything across the wire that isn't really needed on the public site.

If you're using a custom master page/layout, I *think* you can completely suppress core.js, core.css, init.js, and ie55up.js for anonymous users.

I'm pretty sure at least the first 3 are definite, but you'd need to test with your site to be sure - an automated crawler would be best to ensure you've tested all master pages/layouts used on your site.

Hi Chris,

Do you know anything about what JavaScript and CSS files do NOT need to be sent across the wire when the site is public? For example, core.js is 265k.

I've profiled a bunch of Sharepoint sites and the frontend performance is pretty bad! It's not uncommon to find a site that's serving 11 separate JS files and near the same amount of CSS. Can those easily be concatenated/minified?

Great tips, thanks. I came across VRTA recently and it seemed very interesting - there's a lot of overlap with the 'Net' tab in Firebug (shown above) but it may well add further value, I didn't dig deep enough.

And agree on Kerberos - am no expert here but I understand the biggest performance gain is to be had when the user sessions are fairly long in length.

Your post was geared towards WCM sites, but it might be worth mentioning Kerberos as a configuration option for collaborations sites.
