Great article, very helpful thanks. Slightly off topic, but is it possible to have branching logic within the metadata, i.e. if you answer question 1 yes, you are presented with metadata choices 2 and 3, but if you answer question 1 no, you are presented with metadata choices 4 and 5. Wanted to get a quick heads up on the taxonomy and metadata tools within sharepoint 2010 having looked at them a while back.

Interesting that you can import the taxonomy from csv, this could really help us in getting a taxonomy started and engaging users quickly.

I haven't looked at this specifically (though I can completely see where you're coming from), but my theory is that there is no native integration between synonyms in Managed Metadata and synonyms in search.

What happens if you add the same synonyms to the search thesarus file? (I'm assuming you're using Enterprise Search within SharePoint rather than FAST - the latter handles synonyms differently).

Here's some info on adding items to the thesarus file for SharePoint 2007, I'm guessing it's much the same.

Have you tried out search with synonyms/abbreviations? E.g. you have a Term called "Line of business", and add a abbreviation to that term "LOB". If a page is tagged with a Managed Keyword "Line of business", one would expect searching for "LOB" would return this page. Unfortunately I am only getting results returned when "Line of business" is searched for, not "LOB". Thoughts?

Well there are a couple of aspects to this - terms in the term store can have synonyms, as I showed with the 'Plasma' and 'PlasmaSuper'/'PlasmaUltra' example in this article. However remember you get the semantics of synonyms here - they are visible to the user and cannot be selected, the whole point is to steer users towards preferred terms.

I suspect what you're looking for is really the Term.CustomProperties collection. You'd have to use the API to read/write into this, but this will allow you store whatever you like against your terms.
